As part of the NCPC-SA’s sectoral approach, Cleaner Production projects are undertaken in the Chemical Sector. The aim of company specific assessments is
to:
create an awareness of CP within the SA Chemical Sector,
create show cases which could be used to demonstrate the benefits of CP to the industry
provide outputs in support of the sector’s strategy and initiatives (i.e. Energy Efficiency Accord and development of a Greenhouse Gas Inventory)
These assessments are aimed at the Chemical sector as outlined in the dti’s Customised Sector Programme for Chemicals. The sector can subsequently be categorised as follows:
Liquid fuels (Petroleum industry)
Commodity Organic Chemicals - Generally chemicals coming off the petroleum industry processes such as olefins & derivatives (ethylene, polypro, butylenes, but excl rubber & Polymers).
Commodity Inorganic chemicals - Such as metal based chemicals (incl. lime & Ti slags, Chlor alkali chemicals, Industrial gases, Acids and derivatives).
Fine Chemicals - Fine chemicals are usually intermediates or raw materials used to manufacture other products
Pure Functional & Formulated Specialty Chemicals - Includes specialty chemicals such as adhesives, agri-chemicals, metal treatment chemicals, Paints & coatings etc.; Functional chemicals include function specific chemicals i.e. biocides, antioxidants, Inorganic pigments.
