Industry Sectors
Background

The Chemical sector forms one of the priority sectors of the NCPC-SA. Historically this sector has been targeted as having a major impact on the environment, as well as being a significant consumer of energy and water. Coupled with this is that traditionally the sector has been responsible for significant exporting of raw materials and minerals with little or no beneficiation.

With the focus having shifted to South Africa’s energy supply shortages as well as looming future water shortages; more emphasis has been placed on reviewing the activities and approaches to production efficiency within the Chemical Industry Sector.

This is very much in line with the current national drivers which support the need for Cleaner Production:

The need for responsible environmental management by companies because South Africa is facing not only a power crisis but also a shortage of water and increasing waste management crisis.

Increasing economic growth, with increased resource consumption patterns and uncoordinated waste disposal activities also drive the need for CP.

Furthermore, South Africa is also ranked no 11 in the world’s Carbon Dioxide from fossil fuels 2000 (per capita) by country.

Cleaner Production (CP) was identified as one possible mechanism which could be used to enhance the efficiency of the chemical sector, making it more competitive within the global market. CP typically looks at a process holistically, considering all factors that may impact the efficiency of the process (i.e. energy, water, raw materials consumption and waste).

It is anticipated the adoption of Cleaner Production activities would assist any company in attaining an improved environmental efficiency and subsequent improved financial bottom line.
