Background

The Agro-processing sector is one of the key development sectors within South Africa therefore it is important to implement sustainable practices such as Cleaner Production within the entire industry sector. The following are national drivers for the adoption of Cleaner Production:

	The need for responsible environmental management by companies arose because South Africa is facing not only a power crisis but also a shortage of water and increasing waste management crisis.

	Increasing economic growth, with increased resource consumption patterns and uncoordinated waste disposal activities also drive the need for CP.

	Furthermore, South Africa is also ranked no 11 in the world’s Carbon Dioxide from fossil fuels 2000 (per capita) by country.

The abovementioned aspects motivate why adopting Cleaner Production activities would assist any company in attaining an improved environmental efficiency and subsequent improved financial bottom line
