A Brief History

The NCPC-SA was launched during the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg 2002. It is a co-operation program between South Africa and UNIDO with financial assistance from the DTI, CSIR and the Governments of Austria and Switzerland. The NCPC-SA is hosted at the CSIR's Manufacturing and Materials Business Unit, Pretoria.

The NCPC-SA aims to enhance the competitiveness and productive capacity of the national industry, focusing on SME's through Cleaner Production (CP) techniques. CP is an integrated preventive strategy applied to processes, products and services to eliminate or minimise the production of waste and pollution and to optimise the utilisation of resources. CP activities generally improve an organisation's bottom line and invariably improve productivity and competitiveness.

 
NCPC-SA Purpose Statement
The NCPC-SA exists as a national body to strengthen market access by South African industry and business sectors through the fostering of networks to transfer Cleaner Production technologies & services that can contribute to the sustainability of value chains by delivering measurable economic, environment and social impacts that support the national priorities of growth, equity and employment.
 
Goal Statement
The NCPC-SA will strive to be recognized by the private and public sectors as the premier national asset for CP advocacy, information and environmental management solutions.
 
NCPC-SA's Mission
As a national program established by the DTI, CSIR, UNIDO and the Austrian and Swiss governments, the NCPC-SA will promote the application of cleaner production and sustainable industrial development in South Africa using the UNIDO integrated CP approach by providing:
 
Promotion of Environmentally Sound Technologies (EST) and investments
   
Training
   
Audits and technical assistance
   
Information dissemination
   
Technical advice to Government on the application of multi-lateral environmental protocols
   
Policy advice to government on the adoption of CP guidelines and CP practices.
 
NCPC-SA activities
The NCPC –SA 's program aims at increasing competitiveness and the productive capacity of South Africa's industry through building national capacity in CP, fostering dialogue between industry and government and enhancing investments in EST.

The CP Program is based on UNIDO's holistic and sectoral approach which focuses on the entire production cycle and fosters the efficient utilization of waste to design and produce innovative environmentally and economically sound products.
