South Africa Cleantech Competition

Eligibility and rules

All entries must:

  • Fit the definition of one of the Competition’s three clean technology categories
  • Have a team of at least two individuals, and a maximum of 200 employees
  • Be a start-up company with less than R1 million in third-party funding
  • Be a start-up with less than R5 million from other funding sources (grants, family and friends, own funds, etc.). This sum is in addition to and separate from the limit on private third-party funding
  • Have a turnover not exceeding R5 million in the last financial year.

Important:

  • All entries must be a startup that has received less than the financing limits above at the time of application. A startup can be a group of people who have formed a team to enter the contest. However, a legal entity must be created prior to receiving any prizes, and any such legal entity must have an ownership structure typical of an independent startup.
    At least one of the members of the team entering the competition must be a South African citizen of permanent resident.
  • Competition prizes are not intended to subsidize corporate or university projects. The amount  and source of any secured capital arrangements should be clearly identified in the team's application.
  • All winnings are taxable and the winners must comply with applicable requirements of the South African Revenue Service (SARS).


Situations which arise not contemplated by the above rules will be resolved by the organizers of the Competition and their decision will be final. The staff and judging team reserve the right to amend the rules without notice, including in the event where situations occur that are not covered by the above rules or involving further interpretation or clarification of the existing rules, when necessary.
